1. Drink More Water

In fact, try replacing all soda and sugary juices with water. For many people, this is the single easiest and best step to take to start shedding pounds. Soda and juice can add hundreds of needless calories to your daily diet--in fact, a recent study found that some people actually consume more calories by what they drink than by what they eat! Water, of course, has no calories at all, making this one a no-brainer.

2. Reduce or Eliminate "White Food"

White foods are the starches: potatoes, white rice, white bread. Your body metabolizes these foods even quicker than it does pure sugar. These empty carbs flood your body with a burst of easy calories, and therefore should be avoided. Opt for healthier alternatives, such as wheat bread in place of white.

3. Have a Smoothie for Dessert

Smoothies are a delicious way to satisfy that sweet tooth without all the fat and calories of typical desserts. Simply toss some ice and low-cal yogurt into the blender and add your favorite fruit. Mix and match fruits to create new blends each night. In addition to the calorie savings, you'll feel healthier knowing that you're getting all the nutrition from the fruit and yogurt. If your smoothies come out too thick, next time just use more ice and less yogurt.

4. Take a Lesson From Volumetrics

Volumetrics is a diet theory based on the fact that people tend to eat the same volume of food each day--it is the volume of food and not the calorie content which makes us feel full. With that in mind, you'll want to avoid food that is calorie-dense, that is, food which has a high calorie-to-volume ratio. To find this ratio, simply look at the nutrition facts label and divide the calories by the grams per serving. If the number is less than one, perfect. That's why you should purposefully set out smaller portions in front of you, and eating more slowly wouldn't hurt, either!

6. Know Your Fats!

Fats come in three general varieties: Unsaturated, saturated, and trans fat. You probably know that saturated fats are bad. You might know that trans fats are the worst. You might not know that unsaturated fats are actually part of a healthy diet--these are the fats found in nuts and olive oil, for example. Know that not all fats are created equal. Reduce unsaturated fat only when their calorie content becomes too great (other than that, they are healthful). Reduce saturated fats much more heavily. And avoid trans fat like the plague. Check your labels for any ingredients that say "partially-hydrogenated." Those contain trans fat, and yes they are in everything! As a smart consumer, support brands which do not use partially-hydrogenated oils.

7. Get Into a Daily Walk Routine

Walking has been proven beneficial time and time again to anyone trying to get fit. Did you know that walking a mile burns the same amount of calories as jogging a mile? True enough, walking doesn't get your heart rate up as jogging would. But a daily walk is something anyone can do, and comes with the added benefit of being enjoyable--not something you can say about most types of exercise. Eventually you can build up to more strenuous exercise.

There are all sorts of stupid and wrong ideas about weight loss out there. People fall for these ideas every day. When they do not see results they blame themselves. Please do not do this to your-self. There is a basic science and logic behind loosing weight and we have explained it here!

Use this information and use your brain. There are people who are selling "miracle cures" and drugs that claim that they will increase your natural metabolic rate. But all these drugs have terrible side effects! Do not go in for them!

There are people who are selling products that makes it possible for you to do many “ab crunches”! They claim that this will give you a flat tummy. This is wrong. You might strengthen your stomach muscles, but it will still be covered by layers of fat. You need to burn the fat. There is no way, to covert fat into muscle. They are just NOT THE SAME TYPE OF TISSUE! You will have to burn the fat. You will have to use up the fat!

Let us put it as simply as possible... If there is a solution to weight loss that seems like a “miracle” or is too good to be true, it is a scam or it has serious side effects. Follow this rule and you will be safe!


On a more philosophical note…

As you have seen in this article, your body stores energy in the form of fat. This is the way your body prepares you for a situation where there is no food in the future. So, there is surely nothing WRONG with being a little fat. The idea that being fat is wrong is just something that television and the media have created. They have created this idea to attract people and sell their products. But, there is surely nothing wrong with being fat!

There are many people who will stay thin and not gain weight no matter what they eat! They can eat all sorts or high calorie foods like butter and cheese and all their calories will just burn away. They never have worry about gaining too much weight. Why?

Their body has a very high metabolic rate! This means that their body uses up the calories at a much faster rate. That way, they have very few extra calories. And so, the extra calories are not sorted in the form of fat and they never end up getting fat! Lucky, aren’t they!

The truth is, if you just sit around all day, suppose you will burn only 1500 calories, if they sit around all day they will burn off 2000 calories for doing nothing! Why? It’s in genetics! They genetically have a high metabolic rate! Genetically, their body burns up more energy and saves less energy in the form of fat!

If you want a permanent solution to your weight problem, you have to become like them! Once you are like them, you can sit around and burn more calories. You don’t need to be on a diet forever. You do not need to exercise each and every day of your life. You will be burning calories while you sleep, while you sit, while you read!

So, how do you get this “high metabolic rate”?

It’s hard; there is no short cut! It is definitely hard, but once you achieve it, then you can enjoy it!

One of the best ways to develop a high metabolic rate is though building "muscle tissue!" You see, there are many reasons why muscle tissue will increase you metabolic rate like, a muscle tissue requires more energy than a fat tissue etc.. But the part that we are interested in is, if you want to have a high metabolic rate, you need to have more muscle tissue.

To understand how much muscle you need to build, use this method:

First find out your "fat %" age using this calculator.

Now, use the fat % value to calculate your "fat-free mass" using this formula:


Fat free mass = [(100 - Fat%) x Total Weight in Kg] / 100

Then, use this formula to find out how much your RMR or Resting Metabolic Rate (or calories you burn if you do not do anything all day) is:

RMR = 1.3 * Fat Free Mass (in kg) * 24

Suppose you find out that your RMR is 1700, that means that you burn 1700 calories by just sting around all day. If you eat food that has more calories than 1700 per day, you will gain weight.

So, you can increase your metabolic rate from 1700 to something like 2000 by lowering your fat % and increasing your muscle mass!


How do you increase your muscle mass?

Any resistance exercise will help to increase your muscle mass. The best solution is join a gym and tell the trainer that you want to increase your muscle mass. He will guide you! After you have a high enough muscle mass, you will have a high metabolic rate…and you will be burning calories even when you are just sitting around. This is the only permanent solution! Work on this, forget about loosing weight and feeling happy. Work on increasing your metabolic rate. Use the calculators and formulas provided above to measure your progress.

This is obviously not an easy solution. It takes work and dedication. But, in the end it’s the best solution!

Stop eating!?

Well, you could stop eating and taking in calories. This would force the body to the use up the calories that are stored in your fat. If you use up 2500 calories per day, then after 4 days of complete fasting, you should have lost around 7700 calories or 1Kg of fat. If you want to loose 15Kg’s, you will just have to fast for 45 days! But we recommend that you DO NOT do this!!

Mainly because it is a very impractical solution to loosing weight! Even though fasting for one or two days is healthy; fasting for 15 or 45 days is just stupid!

If you do not eat anything, it will be very hard to do any work. Your appetite will really drive you crazy! Your appetite is the thing that makes you feel hungry and makes you want to eat. If you do not eat, your appetite will keep growing and keep “poking” you to eat. Don’t you know, from common experience, how irritable you can get if you are hungry and have not eaten in a long time? That’s your appetite driving you crazy!

So, what do you do then?


Diet!

You could start dieting. What you will have to do is keep an account of how many calories you take in each day. You will have to make sure that you take in fewer calories than you burn each day. For example: If your body needs 2500 calories per day, you must in only have 2000 calories of food each day.

If you do this, each day, your body will have to use 500 calories from your fat. If you follow your diet for 15 days, you will loose 1 Kg! Why? Well, 15 days x 500 calories = 7500 calories taken from fat! That is approximately 1 kg of fat burned!

If you want to loose 15 kg, it will take you "255 days" if follow your diet strictly!

Generally, the problem with dieting is that, it is hard to stick to a diet all the time. You have to go for social functions, outings etc. where you can’t say that you are not going to eat anything because you are on a diet. Besides this, if you go on a strict diet, that too makes you hungry and irritable! Because of that, working may become hard!

The worst thing about diets is that, once you get off your diet, you will re-gain a lot of weight! Why? Because one you get off your diet, and start eating normally, you will once again have extra calories each day!

For example: One you get off your diet, let us assume that you start taking in 2700 calories per day. But, your body needs only 2500 calories per day. You will be taking in 200 calories extra per day! This will build up and in 38 days, again you will have gained 1 kg!

Besides that, as we said earlier, your body is made for survival. So, if you are on a diet, the body thinks that there is not enough food available. So, the body does not use energy “liberally”. The body becomes very careful about how much energy it used. If, when you were not dieting, you needed 2500 calories per day, after you start dieting, you will need only 2000 calories per day! To put it in scientific terms, the body lowers the metabolic rate!

Now, assume that after a few days of dieting, you decide to quit. Now what happens? Since you have stopped dieting, you are taking in 2700 calories per day! But, your body has become very careful about energy usage. So you are using only 2000 calories of energy each day. Because of this, you will have 700 calories extra per day! This will end up as 1kg of fat in 7 days!!

Basically, if you want to diet and stay thin, you can never stop dieting. You will have to diet forever!

However, when dieting, you can solve the “always hungry” or “appetite” problem by taking in foods that are large but have very few calories. Fore example: Eat an apple. If you eat an apple, your “hunger” will go away and you will have taken in very few calories. If you eat a “one cream biscuit” on the other hand, your hunger will still remain but the number of calories that you have eaten will be far more than an apple!

If you are cooking food for your family or your self, you should try these low calorie recipes.

Incorporate these low calorie recipes in your life. You should see the difference immediately! They are designed to make you feel full but give you very few calories in the process. That way, your “appetite” problem can be solved!

But, there is still on problem. Dieting takes too much time for you to loose weight! As we said earlier, if you are on a diet and you consume 500 calories less than you need each day, then too you will need 255 days of consistent dieting to loose 15kg! So, how do we speed up things….

How much energy does your body need?


Depending on your age, weight, the activities you do, etc. you will need a certain amount of calories. If you go for a run every morning, you will require more energy and more calories per day. If you are an athlete you will require more calories per day. If you sit, and work on a computer all day, you will require fewer calories per day.

How many calories do you require, can be roughly calculated by using a calculator like this one.

So, now what? Now that you know how many calories per day you need, then what? Now you got to figure out, how many calories per day you consume. How do you do this?

As your day progresses, make a note of everything that you eat. Each and everything, no matter how small it is. Then, after that, use this calculator. Put in all the things that you ate into the calculator. For each thing you put, you will get a “Calorie” value. Note that value. (You will also get a “Fats” value. Forget about that!)

After you have noted all the values, add them all up. This will be your total calorie intake for that day.

Let us assume that you are getting your total calorie intake to be: 3000 and according to the first calculator, you are getting the calories required by you to be: 2500. This means that you consume 500 calories more than you need per day.

Now remember this: For every 7700 calories extra you gain, you gain "one more kg" of weight!

So if you continue to consume 500 calories more than you need, for around 15 days, you will gain 1 more kilogram. This means, that every month you are going to be 2kg fatter if you do not make some change in the calories you use and the calories you take in!

Could you please tell me how to gain height? I am turning 17 in June and I’m only 5ft 4in; it hurts my self-confidence and makes me extremely depressed. I’m not just a late bloomer because I’m pretty much through puberty now. Help.

Although I can understand your desire to gain height, I am unable to offer you any self-help techniques for this purpose.

At 5ft 4in tall, you are around the tenth centile for your age and height. In other words, if one hundred boys of your age were taken randomly and lined up from tallest to smallest, there would be around ten smaller than you.

One's height and anatomical features however, depend upon inherited factors from your parents and short stature is most commonly related to these alone. Have a chat with your parents about your worries and find out how they fared at your age.

You still have a number of growing years, but if one or other of them are well below average height, you may have already achieved your adult height.

If you add 12.5cm or 5in to your mother's height and then calculate the average height of your parents you can obtain a rough estimate of the sort of height you might be expected to achieve.

If either of your parents experienced a significant delay in growth, then it is possible the same thing is happening to you.

Growth hormone is produced by the pituitary gland at the front of the brain, just above the back of the nose. It is one of a number of trophic hormones (Greek trophe = nourishment) which regulate the growth and activity of the body as a whole or of other hormone secreting [endocrine] glands.

Growth hormone is indicated for the long-term treatment of children who have growth failure due to a lack of growth hormone.

In adults, growth hormone is indicated for replacement therapy for pronounced growth hormone deficiency, which has been confirmed by two different special tests.

Yoga Exercise For Weight Loss

We must exercise our lungs, as often as we can, by Yoga techniques with the emphasis on deep breathing, to enable them to come alive. Yoga exercises are not strenuous. Breathing and relaxation are inseparable function with the exercises the body does. Almost all exercises, involve every part of the body - the spine, the limbs, the chest and the abdomen. There is no spot reducing exercises as in others.

Though there are more than seventy postures in yoga; a few of which when practised regularly give good results in reducing weight. A few such exercises that stimulate the endocrine glands are beneficial for obesity. These are easy to practise daily at a fixed time. You must keep in mind that a natural diet will be more suitable for these exercises.

1. Dhanurasana Method:

  • Lie on the stomach and keep both the legs together.
  • Fold the legs slowly by bending the knees.
  • Breathe slowly in the normal way and lift your head.
  • Arch the back and hold both the legs with your hands near the ankles.
  • Stretch the legs held by the hand a little further to assume a bow's posture. Look up.
  • Remain for a few seconds in this posture Time can be increased after a few days when you are perfect.
  • Release the legs and lower them to the ground.Rest your head down and place the arms on your sides and relax a while and repeat the exercise two or three times.

This exercise stimulates all the endocrine glands from the thyroid in the neck to the sex glands in the pelvic region. The abdominal muscles stretch and enable good digestion. It cures obesity if practised very regularly. It also removes fatigue and lethargy. It is helpful in all irregularities of menses and obesity caused during menopause in women.

This exercise should not be practised by people suffering from hernia, people with spinal injuries and fractures and those suffering from stomach ulcers.

2. Yoga mudra Method:

  • Assume the posture of Padmasana - sitting cross-legged, placing the legs on the thighs of the opposite side, the heels touching the abdomen.
  • Sit erect and hold your right wrist with left hand at the back. Slowly bend forward and touch the ground.
  • While bending forward it is essential to exhale first and then bend, likewise while bending backward it is necessary to inhale first and then bend, because bending forward causes the compression of the abdomen and extension of the spine. If this breathing pattern is mastered, bending exercises will not cause any cramps, pains and other discomforts or giddiness and headache.
  • After sitting cross-legged, hands folded at the back, exhale and slowly bend forward and touch the floor.
  • Stay thus for a few seconds and gradually come back to the original position by inhaling deeply and lifting the head from the ground. Repeat a few more times. Relax and unfold the legs.
  • If sitting in Padmasana causes too much pain, the asana can be started with sitting on Siddhasana, i.e. crossing just one leg on the thigh opposite to it.
